A study that needs to be done
I’m a little tied up right now, but someone should do a study to see what the correlation is between parties in power and state finances.
Here’s my hypothesis. State finances corresponds most closely to who owns the legislature for the longest time. I’m saying that states where the Democrats have held sway the most (CA, MA, etc.) are in the worst shape even though they have had a mix of governors. States where Republicans have dominated the legislature (MT, TX, FL) are in better shape.
People tend to focus on the executive as the person responsible for budgets and finances. But actually it is the legislature that really controls the purse strings. Let’s see which party does better.
