The Process

Update: (Term limits and fiscal limits are long overdue.  I always thought it was an oversight on the part of the Constitution’s authors, but they did not foresee the income tax amendment and the apparently unlimited amount of money that would give the government.   My apologies to the Founding Fathers.)

Update 2: (Yeah…never let a good crisis go to waste.  People marching in the streets with torches and pitchforks.  Let’s put this outrage to good use.)

Congress has shown a need for more constraints imposed by the Constitution.  Two things in particular are needed.  Term limits and enforceable fiscal limits.

Congress will never pass a constitutional amendment to limit its own power.  Fortunately, the smart guys who wrote the Constitution thought of that.  Two thirds of the state legislatures can call for a convention to amend the Constitution.  The risk of a convention is that it could go crazy like a Democratic congress and try to write a European Union 400 page constitutional abomination.  But the resulting amendments still have to get ratified by 3/4th of the states.  If the states call for the convention, I don’t think they’ll be in the mood to get a gigantic government constitution.

Here’s a first cut at amendments, just for examples.  I’m no lawyer…and it shows I’m sure.

The Tea Parties need to start pushing on the State Legislatures to call a Constitutional Convention.  Yeah, there’s all kinds of potential for disaster with that course of action.  But the Democrats in Congress are going to kill us unless they don’t start to get the message that their corruption and abuse of power will not stand.
