Many people have heard of Lincoln’s ‘House Divided’ speech. Most people don’t know where he was going with it. The common understanding was predicting the division of the country. Actually he specifically stated that, “…a house divided cannot long stand…” did not mean that the house would fall. What he predicted was that that the house would have to resolve its difference and become either all free or all slave. In 1865 it looked like the decision was made to make the country all free. But the slave masters were allowed to persist. Reconstruction. Jim Crow. Lynchings. Segregation. The works…were all attempts of the slave masters to subdue the former slaves again. Slowly, progress was made against the slave masters.
But in the early 20th Century, the wanna be slave masters found a new tool. “Progressivism”. For 100 years the “Progressives” have worked to impose their will on the country. “Progressivism” has been described as, day one, the “Progressive” makes up their mind. Day two, they make up your mind.
Looks like once again we are faced with a house divided between free and slave. The slave masters are moving to make the country whole again, but this time all slave. The issue is gun control and the “Progressive’s” move to disarm all of the country, except of course, themselves.
Why, you ask, does disarming the population imply that the slave masters are trying to make slaves of the American people. It’s simple. Free people are free to defend themselves and have the right to bear arms to affect that right. Slaves are never allowed to arm or protect themselves. Is the secret service going to give up guns when they protect the President? Are Bloomberg’s armed guards going to give up the weapons for the cause? It’s ever so interesting that the people who are the most vociferous about banning guns for the rest of us have no intention of disarming their own protectors. It’s obvious who they think the masters will be.
Stuck this comment on an Ann Althouse post down at 9:08 PM. It’s my response to people posting that the American Revolution was “anti-colonial”.
The American Revolutionaries were not “anti-colonial”. They were anti-monarchists. The Revolution started as a tax rebellion before it became an independence movement. But the Declaration of Independence was addressed directly at King George III.
What the Founders sought, the basis of classical liberalism, libertarianism, Tea Partyism, etc is the aversion to the concentration of power. The way to avoid concentrations of power is to delegate it to the smallest groups, namely individuals. The system of Checks and Balances, the Advice and Consent clause, the separate branches were all created to prevent the concentration of power and especially the re-establishment of a monarchy. Without constitutional restraint, it becomes possible for 51% of the population to vote the other 49% into slavery.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the goal of the so-called “Progressives”. The concentration of all power in the hands of a government run by “Progressives” that through the dictatorship of the proletariat, unrestrained by quaint concepts of constitutional constraints, enslave opposing minorities to their will. And Obama, the Most Arrogant Man In the World plans on being their King.
Getting ready to make my second pilgrimage to the aviation Mecca of the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. Even though I haven’t flown (like, as a pilot) for twenty six years, aviation/aerospace is still my main interest. Despite the fact that the family/father/financial reality thing has pretty much put the kibosh on my flying plans until sometime in my next lifetime. <sigh>
The bitter part is seeing how general aviation has withered since my flying days. The airport I learned to fly at is closed. It’s soybeans now (dry ones at that). Most of the airports that I flew to are almost empty now. Where there used to be lines of airplanes on the ramps, now there are only a few…or none. Admittedly, the price of airplanes has gone up enough that most people probably keep their investments in hangers and shelters, there aren’t that many of those either.
For eons, homo sapiens were stuck on the ground watching birds with envy. For a mere instant in the ages of the Earth, humans have been able to fly with the birds, freed from the ground. Unfortunately, for that same century, the intellectual putrescence of Progressivism has sought to impose another Dark Age where their is no room for the freedom to fly. The goal of the regulatory state is to crush out any conceivable form of freedom. Every act in the regulatory state is either mandated or prohibited, eliminating any opportunity to choose an independent course of action. The regulators have tried to ban guns and failed to date. They are trying to dictate everything people eat. They have almost succeeded in regulating little airplanes out of existence. Just too much freedom going on there.
So I go not knowing if it is really a celebration of the freedom of flight, or its eulogy. A last glimmer of light before the sunset.
From Ed Morrissey via Hot Air, another Democrat congressman calls for Obama to seize dictatorial power. That the Great God Obama should simply ignore Constitutional restraints and begin enacting Democratic Party policies unilaterally (not to mention illegally).
I have called the Democratic Party the Party of Slavery for a long time. Since 1826 the Democrats have pursued the power for one group of people to own another. The Democrats were the Pro-Slavers before the Civil War. They were the party in power in the Secessionist states that sought to destroy the United States to preserve their right to own people. They were the party of Reconstruction Terror in the South. They were the party of the Ku Klux Klan. (can you spell Robert Byrd?) And the Democrats are the party of “Progressivism” that has sought nothing less than the establishment of a political aristocracy, a political overlord class (aka The Democratic Party) ruling over an enslaved serf class (everyone else).
What the Democrats are pushing now is not just the rise of the political overlord class, but the establishment of a “Supreme Ruler” to reign over them.
That, boys and girls, is why I always put “Progressive” in quotes. Because there is nothing progressive about the agenda of the political Left. They want to take us back to the age of monarchs and (almost to difficult to write because I’m choking on an overabundance of sarcasm) “nobility”.
