On Constitutional Conventions

Rob Natelson at Freedom’s Front Line has an informative article considering the validity of claims that the Constitutional convention of 1787 was a “runaway convention” and finding the claim wanting.  Not mentioned explicitly in the article is that the issue of a “runaway convention” is the case made against move to have the states call for a constitutional convention as called out in Article V of the US Constitution to propose amendments to limit federal power.  But there is another case to be made against the claimed threat of constitutional convention run amok.  Namely, the convention is powerless except for the proposing of amendments.  Those amendments still have to be ratified by 3/4ths of the states and that has been and will remain a major obstacle.  If a constitutional convention proposes a 400 page European Union Constitution, or tries to go beyond the stated purpose of limiting federal power, then the states don’t have to ratify it.  In fact, the more crap that a convention throws out beyond it stated license, the more likely the states will simply reject everything.

Problem of a “runaway convention” solved.

The Democrats’ policy of National Energy Suicide

Have you ever noticed that every time a Democrat goes, “We are going to reduce America’s dependency on foreign oil.” our dependency on foreign oil goes up?  It’s almost like they were taking money from foreign oil producers to destroy US domestic energy production.  Obama loans George Soros $2 Billion to drill off the coast of Brazil while putting a seven year block on US offshore drilling.  It would be insane unless you recognize the Democrat’s policy of “National Energy Suicide.” that has been their stock and trade since the Carter administration.

Obama’s “Read my lips…” moment?

By all indications, Obama picked the worst possible approach to avoid the Democratic tax increase.  The two year extension just handed the Republicans their first campaign issue of the 2012 season.  His “All your moneys are belong to us.” leftist base is enraged.  Like George H. W. before him (a vast improvement over always being compared to Carter) it’s a lesson in being careful what you promise.  Although, under the policy of giving credit where credit is due, a hat tip for his recognizing a basically untenable position against the conservative juggernaut.  It doesn’t have to be two years of gridlock and political warfare.

Update:  Richard Fernandez says Obama is Mr. Lonely.  But he can always hang out with George Sr.
